Why Indians fast on certain days

There are several days that the Indian people go fasting.. giving a break to their body from food. Wont they be hungry... of course I will be hungry if I am fasting. Some of the days of fasting include Shivarathiri, Ekadasi, Arthalika and many many more. With the fasting itself different people follow different levels of fasting :-) starting from no solid/liquid food (including water), just liquid food (limited to few times on that day), just fruits and no uncooked food, potato & sabhudana based dishes (I could hear..is this really fasting), many more types depending on their wish/capability. Most of the times when people do fasting and alongside they will have prayers to god or in other words they would fast for the god by praying for a wish. I just want to clarify that all of these are about fasting by individuals and not group fasting for social/political reasons which may differ.

Why fasting ?
We all know that the earth revolves around the sun and all planets around the solar system is moving... due to which we have day/night and different seasons. Our ancestors have brought the calendar based on mathematical calculation that was done 1000s of years ago which is based on planets/objects in the solar system. During certain days when earth gets into a certain geographical location with other planets or sun.. say for example: on a solar eclipse or lunar eclipse. During these kinds of days that are not just eclipses (others that commonly occuer frequently each month), earth gets rays..kind of non normal rays that we get which would cause certain effects on living beings. If we have eaten fully, these rays may get us in trouble as in stomach upset or indigestion and few more. On certain days if we are sleeping during those time, it may have a different effect on us. Sometimes they also bath after the certain time.. like after eclipse is completed, they would bath.

Why/Reasons:
* During certain days with the geographical changes, having food might cause some harm effects on us. It is better to avoid them during those time.

* It is good to fast in a while so that the body gets some rest with digestive system.

* Fasting on behalf of prayers will give satisfaction and also a belief.

Now:
* The geographic causes are always there and it is better to avoid food at least on days like eclipse.

* Instead of eating always, it will be really good to give our body a break.
